Sealed unit and integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass & Glazing has extended its apprenticeship programme with the help of North Lancs Training Group.
Bohle has expanded its balustrading offer with the EasyMount 6020, which introduces significant hardware savings to cut the cost of balustrade installation.
Rapid and effective air and weather tight sealing around windows and doors is provided by a new easy-to-use collar system from foam sealants specialists ISO-CHEMIE.
The company’s first apprentice Kieran Buchan completed his NVQ Level 2 in Glass Processing last year and has now progressed to the higher Level 3. He says: “At Morley there is always something new to learn, all the managers and supervisors are willing to share their skills and it’s really given me confidence in my abilities. Doing an NVQ has really helped me understand my job a lot better.”
A heavy-duty addition the to the EasyMount range, the 6020 withstands a linear load of up to 1.5kN, installed more easily and at a lower cost than traditional systems. Rather than requiring countersunk fixings, it uses counterbored. Meaning standard head anchor bolts can be used to mount the system rather than the expensive countersunk fixings. Distances between mounting points are also increased, reducing installation times and fixings required. Dave Broxton, MD, Bohle, said: “The savings are substantial. The cost of countersunk head fixings can run to almost as much as the profile system itself, so there is a clear cost-benefit to switching to a counterbore system which allows bolts with a standard head to be used. It’s also suitable for use in residential and light commercial applications, for example office installations, without needing to use rigid toughened laminates such as Sentry glass. Four or five times more expensive than standard PVB interlayers, that’s another very significant saving.”
The self-adhesive ISO-CONNECT EPDM Sealing Collar is a single-piece bespoke solution, which can be quickly fitted around fenestration elements installed in façades and load bearing walls to provide long lasting external protection against the elements.
Elsewhere in the business, two other members of the Morley team have now embarked on NVQs in Business Administration. Last month, Nathan Hall and Kevin Murphy started Level 2 and Level 4 of the NVQ respectively.
Featuring vulcanised sections, the collar can be fitted up to six times faster than alternative foil strip sealants via a butyl adhesive or a clip-in frame groove feature, saving onsite labour and material costs.
Previously a sales assistant at BHS, Nathan now works in the sales department, advising customers and handling orders. Having joined in 2016 he is enjoying the chance to earn an additional qualification, which includes a visit from a GQA approved North Lancs Training Group tutor every four to six weeks.
Product can be customised to specific applications – the fitter places the collar around the frame section in front of the wall before securely bonding it to the supporting wall or façade.
Ian Short MD said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for the team to gain new skills, qualifications and a greater understanding of the business. I’m sure the business will benefit from the new ideas, as well as from a more motivated and inspired team. Hats off to Kieran, Kevin and Nathan who are committed to investing in their personal development and the future growth of the business.”
Each system also comes with a full range of ancillaries. “Glass balustrading remains a growth area and our range is growing with it to deliver increased opportunities for profit to our customers. The EasyMount 6020 and 6021 represent a logical evolution of that offer, delivering significant savings and the flexibility for installation in not only residential but also commercial applications, using a single system”, he concluded.
It also possesses good diffusion properties and complies with the relevant building regulations and DIN EN standards, covering thermal conductivity, dimension tolerance, and resistance to driving rain on joints among others.
By offering real life work experience with a qualification alongside, apprenticeships and traineeships offer an ideal route for those looking to start out and progress within a company, with over 250,000 workplaces in the UK currently offering such schemes.
Supplied with a 10-year warranty and available in 0.6mm, 0.75mm, 1mm, 1.3mm and 1.5mm thicknesses, the Sealing Collar comes in a choice of four finishes to suit all applications. Moulded inside and outside corners are also available for in front-of-wall elements, lower connection areas, floor-level elements, and balcony and patio door systems.
Available in a side-mounted option, EasyMount 6021, both systems can accommodate glass thicknesses of between 12mm and 21.52mm. Fixing points to achieve a 0.74kN residential linear loading are every 20cm on the 6020 and 40cm for the side mounted 6021.
Manufactured from flexible EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), which can compensate for joint movements due to its high elasticity properties, the Sealing Collar is resistant to extremes of temperature and weather.
